“The Body is Born – The Witness Self is Unborn” #Vedanta Panchadasi – Day 2
📿 Vedanta Panchadasi – Second Day Discourse
(Summary of the First Part)
In this section, Sri Vidyaranya Swami begins the text Vedanta Panchadasi with Guru Stuti (praise of the Guru).
First, he expresses gratitude to the Guru who bestowed Brahma-jnana (knowledge of Brahman) upon him.
This Guru is understood in two ways:
1️⃣ Shankarānanda Guru – the direct teacher who imparted knowledge.
2️⃣ Nārāyaṇa (the Supreme Being) – the original source of the Guru tradition.
That is why sannyasis often chant “Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa.”
🌿 The Truth of Existence
Vedanta declares a profound truth:
> “What truly exists never ceases to exist, and what does not exist can never come into being.”
The Bhagavad Gita says:
> “Na sato vidyate bhāvo, nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ.”
This means:
The real never perishes.
Only names and forms change.
Birth, life, and death are merely changes of form.
But the Self (Ātman) never changes.
🌊 Ignorance as a Whale
Vidyaranya Swami gives a powerful metaphor.
Ignorance is like a huge whale that has held us in its grip for countless births.
But the lotus feet of the Guru have the power to swallow that ignorance.
This means:
👉 The knowledge given by the Guru destroys ignorance completely.
🪷 Who is the Guru?
A Guru is not merely a person.
In Vedanta:
👉 Guru = manifestation of the Supreme Reality.
Because:
> “Brahmavid Brahmaiva bhavati”
The knower of Brahman becomes Brahman.
Therefore it is said:
> “Guru is verily the Supreme Brahman.”
📖 Central Teaching of Vedanta Panchadasi
The main truth taught in this text is:
👉 The individual soul (Jiva) is none other than Brahman.
Due to ignorance, we think we are separate individuals.
When knowledge arises, the same Jiva is recognized as the very nature of Ishvara (the Absolute).
🧠 Scripture and Guru
Scriptures alone are not enough.
Scripture is inert knowledge.
The Guru is living knowledge.
The Bhagavad Gita says:
> “Tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā.”
Meaning:
1️⃣ Approach the Guru with humility.
2️⃣ Ask questions sincerely.
3️⃣ Serve the Guru.
Then true knowledge becomes clear.
🌸 Two Defects of the Mind
The mind mainly suffers from two defects:
1️⃣ Āvaraṇa (Tamas) – ignorance that hides the truth.
2️⃣ Vikṣepa (Rajas) – restlessness caused by countless thoughts.
The mind constantly oscillates between these two.
✨ Essence of the First Part
Vedanta Panchadasi begins with praise of the Guru.
The Guru is the embodiment of the Supreme.
Ignorance binds us like a whale.
The Guru’s teaching destroys ignorance.
The central message of Vedanta: Jiva is Brahman.
Without a Guru, scripture does not yield full realization.
The mind is disturbed by Āvaraṇa and Vikṣepa.
📿 Vedanta Panchadasi – Second Day Discourse
(Summary of the Second Part)
In this part, the Guru explains Karma Yoga, the three gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas), and the three states of consciousness (waking, dream, deep sleep).
🌿 Two Obstacles to Liberation
The mind has two major defects:
1️⃣ Āvaraṇa (Tamas) – ignorance that hides reality.
2️⃣ Vikṣepa (Rajas) – distraction and agitation.
These two bind the human being in samsara.
To overcome them, Sattva must increase.
⚙️ The True Meaning of Karma Yoga
Karma Yoga does not merely mean performing rituals.
👉 It means acting without ego and possessiveness.
“I did it” = Ego (Rajas)
“This is mine” = Possessiveness (Tamas)
When these disappear, Sattva increases.
The Bhagavad Gita says:
> “Sattvāt sañjāyate jñānam.”
From Sattva arises knowledge.
🧠 Guru’s Teaching Purifies the Mind
By serving the Guru and listening to his teaching:
The mind becomes pure.
Rajas and Tamas decrease.
Sattva increases.
Then hearing, reflection, and meditation become easy.
👁 Experience in the Waking State
In waking life we perceive:
Sound
Touch
Form
Taste
Smell
These are objects known through the senses.
They are:
Different from each other
Infinite in variety
But the knowledge that knows them is one.
Objects change.
Knowledge does not change.
🌙 The Dream State
In dreams also:
Many experiences appear.
But the witness that observes them is the same consciousness.
The difference is:
The waking world appears stable.
The dream world is unstable.
😴 Deep Sleep
In deep sleep we say:
> “I knew nothing, yet I slept happily.”
This statement reveals something profound.
Someone must have experienced that ignorance.
Therefore:
👉 The witnessing consciousness exists even in deep sleep.
Because:
Memory always follows experience.
✨ Essence of the Second Part
Rajas and Tamas cause bondage.
Sattva leads to knowledge.
Karma Yoga means acting without ego.
Objects change in waking and dream.
The witnessing consciousness never changes.
The witness exists even in deep sleep.
📿 Vedanta Panchadasi – Second Day Discourse
(Summary of the Third Part)
Here Vidyaranya Swami proves a fundamental truth:
👉 The same witnessing consciousness exists in waking, dream, and deep sleep.
🌙 Mystery of Deep Sleep
We say:
> “I knew nothing but slept happily.”
If we say this,
it means ignorance itself was experienced.
Therefore someone witnessed that ignorance.
That witness is pure consciousness.
🧠 Memory and Experience
A rule is stated:
> Every memory must be preceded by experience.
If you remember something,
it means you experienced it earlier.
Therefore the memory of ignorance in sleep proves
👉 Consciousness was present in deep sleep.
👁 Witness Consciousness
In waking:
The world appears.
In dream:
The dream world appears.
In deep sleep:
Ignorance appears.
But the witnessing consciousness remains the same.
It never changes.
🌿 Nature of Knowledge
Colors are many:
Red
Yellow
Black
White
But the seeing awareness is one.
Likewise:
Experiences are many,
but the knowing consciousness is one.
It is formless and changeless.
🔄 Cycle of Life
Life revolves around three states:
Waking
Dream
Deep sleep
This cycle repeats daily.
This is called the cycle of samsara.
The Bhagavad Gita says:
> “Evam pravartitam cakram.”
🌞 Essence of the Third Part
Even deep sleep has witnessing consciousness.
Memory proves prior experience.
The witness is one in all three states.
Objects change but awareness does not.
Life revolves around the cycle of states.
The witness is the Self.
📿 Vedanta Panchadasi – Second Day Discourse
(Summary of the Fourth Part)
In this final part, Vidyaranya Swami establishes a decisive truth.
Everything changes in the world:
People are born and die.
Ideas arise and disappear.
Civilizations rise and fall.
But one thing never changes.
👉 Witnessing Consciousness.
🌍 The World Changes – Knowledge Does Not
Time changes.
Places change.
Objects change.
Scientists appear and disappear.
But the consciousness that observes everything never changes.
It neither rises nor sets.
It neither begins nor ends.
🧠 Why Knowledge Cannot Die
If someone says knowledge is born and dies,
a question arises:
Who knows that knowledge was born?
Who knows that knowledge disappeared?
The answer:
👉 Knowledge itself.
Therefore knowledge cannot be destroyed.
It is the witness of all changes.
🌟 What is the Self?
Vidyaranya Swami now reveals:
👉 This very consciousness is the Self (Ātman).
Ātman is not somewhere else.
Ātman is:
Awareness
Consciousness
Witnessing presence.
🌼 Sat – Chit – Ananda
The Self has three characteristics:
1️⃣ Sat (Existence)
It always exists:
In waking
In dream
In deep sleep
2️⃣ Chit (Consciousness)
It is pure awareness that knows everything.
3️⃣ Ananda (Bliss)
Every being loves itself.
Everyone wishes:
> “May I always exist.”
That love for existence shows the Self is blissful by nature.
❤️ The Truth About Love
We think we love:
Family
Children
House
Money
But in reality,
we love them because they bring happiness to us.
The Upanishad says:
> “Ātmanastu kāmāya sarvam priyam bhavati.”
Everything is dear for the sake of the Self.
🕉 Ātman = Brahman
Finally, Vidyaranya Swami declares:
The Brahman spoken of in the Upanishads
is not somewhere else.
👉 It is your own Self.
Your real nature is:
Sat
Chit
Ananda
That is Brahman.
🌺 Essence of the Fourth Part
Consciousness never arises or dies.
The body is born, not the Self.
The witnessing awareness is eternal.
The Self is Sat-Chit-Ananda.
All love ultimately points to the Self.
Ātman and Brahman are one.
🕉 Om Shanti Shanti Shanti 🙏
